Beams

Spans, supports and loads, shear and moment diagrams, section cuts and deflections.

Examples, downloads and media retain their original language.

    Set up the beam

A Beam study starts as a simply supported span. Use Geometry on the left rail to change the length, Supports to place pins, rollers and fixed ends, and Loads for point loads, couples and distributed loads.

Tap a load, support or dimension on the beam to edit it, or hold a load for more actions.

    Shear and moment

With Equilibrium, the result bar offers Reactions, Shear and Moment. Diagrams are drawn below the beam with their largest values marked; Inspect follows your finger along the span.

At a point load or a couple the value jumps. Choose the event in the results and read its left (−) and right (+) limits.

    Section cuts

A section cut shows the equilibrium of the segment on either side of a point x: the internal shear and moment act on the cut with the sign convention drawn. Drag the cut line along the beam to move x, or jump to the largest |V| or |M|.

    Deflection

Switch to Linear elastic and give the beam a material and a section, or E and I directly. Deformed then shows the deflected shape, and Inspect reads the deflection and rotation at any point.
